Saturday Jan 29, 2011 - Heritage Trail - CHANGE OF PLANS

Through our friends at DEC (Department of Environment and Conservation) we've been reliably advised that ALL National Parks South of Jurien Bay will be closed from 9:00am on Saturday Jan 29 due to the possibility of extreme weather.

CONSEQUENTLY OUR PLANNED HERITAGE TRAIL RIDE IS CANCELLED. We will look to re-schedule. Watch this blog!!

Consider for Heritage trail ride on Saturday Jan 29 (parking and bathers)

Parking at Pechey Park has always been dodgey ..with cars prone to break in and I understand that cycling forums are reporting an increased level of break in, theft and damage to cars parked there.

I usually park down the hill in the parking adjoining shops alongside Swan View Park.

Also Francis Vivier has invited those who are interested to have a swim at his house in Darlington on the way back ...if you're interested bring your bathers!

2011 SmokeFree Perth Criteriums

There is some fantastic cycling viewing on at the moment. This weekend saw the Australian Road Cycling championship in Ballarat and, of course, The Tour Down Under starts January 18. In February, we have The 2011 SmokeFree Perth Criteriums. We've been to watch these in previous years and really enjoyed the excitement.

For me, this year there will be some extra excitement as my son, Dave, will be cycling in the event as a member of the Broad team.

We'll do the easy mountain bike ride on the Heritage Trail. We'll take the track North of Great Eastern Highway up to Sawyers Valley. This a fairly easy, steady climb. Then we'll cross the highway and return on the side with a stop at Darlington for coffee / food. The return is mainly downhill and in parts quite fast.

For those of you who haven't done much mountain bike riding this is an excellent way to get accustomed to MTB rides. I'm not very confident off road (some might say I'm not that good on road either!!) but this is an enjoyable, non intimidating ride.

We'll meet at Maylands at 7:30 or the Narrows (South side) at 8:00.  We'll ride down the Freeway bike path, then detour along the Roe Highway  bike path before turning back to Denada at  Brentwood or Deep Water Point for coffee. After coffee we'll head back to the Narrows.

We're planning the old familiar "Friendly Freo" with the usual obligatory coffee stop (in Fremantle). We'll have the usual Maylands Railway Station start at 7:30 am then hook up at the Narrows. The ride will start from the Narrows Bridge (North Side - where the bike path goes under the freeway bridge) at 8:00 am. The route will take us through Mosman Park (don't forget to let me know if you're joining the ride)

Life Cycle for CanTeen - Familiarisation Rides

For the past few years we've held Familiarisation rides in the weeks prior to Life Cycle for CanTeen. The rides are an opportunity to meet other participants for an easy paced ride and, for new participants, to learn some riding tips or have your bike checked out.

The ride typically goes along the river to somewhere like Deep Water, Mt Pleasant or winds towards Cottesloe and includes a break / coffee stop.

This year we've scheduled two familiarisation rides [Sunday Jan 30th and Sunday Feb 13th]. We'll meet at About Bike Hire, Point Fraser Reserve, (Causeway Carpark), 1-7 Riverside Drive at 8:30am and plan to be back around 12:30 pm.

We'll do the usual starts (Maylands and Narrows South) and take the Freeway bike path south towards Rockingham, going as far as the group consensus takes us (Thomas Road, Kwinana and back will give us 60kms). Coffee at Denada?
